Fly tying eyes – role and application
Fly tying eyes are among the basic materials used when tying streamers and saltwater flies, including shrimp imitations. Their use improves the realism of the fly’s shape, increases visual attractiveness and effectiveness, and can also influence the way the fly moves in the water.
Adhesive eyes – 3D and flat eyes
The most popular group includes adhesive eyes such as 3D eyes and flat eyes. They are attached near the hook eye using glue or UV resin. Available in many colours and sizes, they are widely used in streamers, saltwater flies and large baitfish imitation patterns.
Tied-in eyes – light and heavy
The second group consists of eyes designed to be tied directly onto the hook shank using thread. They are available in light versions such as bead chain eyes and heavier versions such as twin eyes, allowing the tier to influence the balance of the fly and its behaviour in the water. These types of eyes are commonly used in trout streamers, saltwater flies and patterns for other predatory species.
Use in different fly patterns
Fly tying eyes are used in many types of patterns – from classic streamers, through modern baitfish imitations, to saltwater and coastal flies. Choosing the right type, size and colour of eyes makes it possible to adapt the fly to specific water conditions and fish preferences.
Choosing the right eyes
The selection of fly tying eyes depends on the size of the pattern, the fishing technique and the desired visual effect and movement of the fly. Eyes may serve a purely aesthetic function or support the construction and stability of the pattern, which is why they should always be chosen deliberately for a specific application.
