Brass beads for fly tying
Brass beads are classic weighting beads used as fly-tying materials. They are most commonly applied in nymphs, larvae, emerging insect imitations, as well as in selected streamer patterns and lake flies, when an attractive head finish, added shine and light weighting are desired.
Why brass?
Brass provides gentle weighting, while the availability of various colours — from natural metallic finishes (gold, copper, silver) to fluorescent options — allows for tying both natural-looking and highly provocative patterns. This makes it easier to adapt the fly to changing water conditions and fish preferences. Brass beads are a good choice when maximum weight is not required and a lighter fly with a controlled sink rate is preferred.
Use in nymphs, larvae and streamers
Brass beads are frequently chosen for classic nymphs and emerging insect imitations, where maintaining proper proportions of the pattern is essential. In streamers, for example leech imitations, a brass bead can serve as an aesthetic accent while also helping the fly track slightly deeper without excessively weighting the entire pattern.
Brass vs tungsten – difference in weight
Brass beads look the same as tungsten versions; however, tungsten is a much heavier material — nearly twice as heavy. For this reason, tungsten beads are used when stronger weighting of the fly is required. If you need more weight at the same bead diameter, see also tungsten beads.
Available options
This category includes brass beads in popular colours and diameters ranging from 1.5 mm to 5.5 mm. This makes it possible to adjust both the appearance and the amount of weighting to a specific fly pattern and the conditions encountered on the water.
