Fly Tying Varnish, Glue and UV Resin

( number of products: 34 )

Varnish, glue and UV resin finish a fly and make it more durable: they seal the head, give the body a hard coat and secure the eyes. Two sections cover varnishes and glues, and UV resins plus the UV torches that cure them.

Varnish, glue or UV resin: which to choose

Varnish, glue and UV resin are the fly tying materials that decide how long a fly lasts. They differ in how they dry and what they are used for:

  • Varnish and glue – dry on their own. Varnish and shellac finish the head and are applied in thin coats, while superglue reinforces the fly: you coat the tying thread with it and fix materials to the hook shank.
  • UV resin – cures only under a UV torch. Used for Perdigon and buzzer bodies, streamer heads and securing eyes.

Where to start

A clear fly tying varnish and a brush-on superglue are enough to begin with. They will finish most nymphs, wet flies and dry flies. UV resin and a UV torch become useful once you tie Perdigon nymphs and streamers with eyes, and on large spinning lures superglue works best.

What to keep on the tying bench

  • a dubbing needle (bodkin) for applying small drops,
  • a UV torch for curing resin,
  • a stable bottle holder, so an open bottle cannot tip over.

Working safely with varnish, glue and resin

Work in a well-ventilated room and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Superglue bonds skin in seconds, and a UV torch should never be pointed at the eyes. Keep bottles tightly closed and out of the reach of children; the manufacturer's instructions are on the label.
